Class Description

Description

Join artist Julia Norton in this all levels art history and art making course explores the uses and histories of natural color materials, such as pigments, inks, and dyes.

We will look at rare materials firsthand (such as lapis lazuli stones, indigo dye, and cochineal insects), make our mediums, such as watercolor paint, as well as study specific examples of color use from ancient to contemporary art. Together we will push our art making to a greater realm, centering color materials for all the beautiful potential they carry and the way they have shaped our perception of color today. Less than 200 years ago, all color materials came from nature. They have dramatically impacted our world throughout history, and it is impossible to separate what gives an art object its color from the global events circling its production. In this class we will explore these considerations by looking at art historical examples from all time periods, including ample discussion around various topics such as personal association, the impact of colonialism, color theory, and more. Additionally we will play with art making techniques associated with these natural materials (which come from earth, plants, and animals) to get a better sense of their unique qualities. Artists working in any media will be able to broaden their concepts and intentions through this intensive consideration of color materiality.
