Class Description

Description

This comprehensive figure drawing course is designed for artists seeking to deepen their understanding of the human form and harness drawing as a strategic tool for planning compelling and effective compositions. Combining classical and contemporary approaches, the course integrates core disciplines including figure drawing, anatomical study, composition principles, and perspective into a cohesive curriculum that builds a robust visual language grounded in careful observation and deliberate artistic intention.

Students will explore the structural logic and underlying anatomy of the body through systematic anatomical studies, learning to capture dynamic poses with confidence and conviction. You will apply principles of linear and atmospheric perspective to position figures believably and convincingly within three-dimensional space. Emphasis will be placed on compositional strategy and planning, teaching artists to move beyond isolated figure studies toward integrated narrative and spatial planning for sustained finished works.

Through live model sessions, analysis of masterwork examples, and progressive drawing exercises, students will learn to:

  • Understand the anatomical landmarks that are essential to expressive and accurate figure drawing
  • Employ gesture and structural drawing to convey weight, dynamic movement, and emotional content
  • Construct spatially sound compositions using both linear and atmospheric perspective techniques
  • Design effective value groupings and focal points that support narrative intent and overall mood
  • Translate preliminary thumbnail sketches into developed studies for paintings or extended, sustained drawings

This course is ideal for artists at any level who wish to integrate figure drawing more intentionally and strategically into their painting practice and overall artistic development.
