Class Description

Description

Learn the basic structures of the portrait and figure in order to create solid form and proportion in drawings from observation and imagination.

The class will cover basic anatomy of the skeleton and musculature to give students the tools to depict the body in three dimensions. Students will draw from a live model and key concepts will be taught with short illustrated lectures and individual coaching.

In this class you will be encouraged to work in pencil and/or charcoal. Please bring pencil drawing materials to
the first day of class.

Pencil (For first class)

  • Pencils: H, HB, 2B (1 of each: “H” pencils are harder, “B” pencils are softer.)
  • Pencil sharpener or blade for sharpening pencils. I encourage the use of Kohinoor or Mars‐Staedtler’s
“architect’s pencils” or “lead holders” ‐ mechanical pencils that hold 2mm graphite sticks. These require a
special rotary sharpener that goes with them in order to sharpen the leads. The graphite sticks come in the same H, HB, 2B, etc. as normal wood pencils. I use multiple holders, one for each type of graphite.
  • Strathmore 400 Series “Drawing” Paper, Bristol Plate Smooth Finish paper, or another type of quality drawing paper. Multiple sheets or a pad, 18” x 24”
  • Newsprint is not recommended for most of the drawings we will be doing in the class, with the exception of quick gesture poses.

Charcoal:

  • Vine charcoal (medium or soft, at least 6 sticks)
  • Generals Charcoal Pencils (HB, 2B, 4B)
  • Generals White Charcoal Pencil
  • Charcoal Paper, 4 sheets: Canson Mi‐Teintes or Fabriano pastel/charcoal paper. Middle‐value blue, grey, or brown, 19” x 25”.
  • Nitram Charcoal Shaper (sanding pad for sharpening Vine Charcoal or Charcoal Pencils)
  • Straight Razor blade for sharpening (like the blades that go in paint scrapers)
