Class Description

Description

This hands-on workshop will introduce you to the world of knifesmithing, the art, science, and practice of using heat and hammers, along with other specialized tools, to shape steel into beautiful blades. You will transform a rough preform of 4140 steel into a stunning knife of your own unique design. The blank provides flexibility for you to take your knife in a variety of different directions and custom styles. Learn how to shape a clip point, drop point, or create some blending of design that you personally envision.

The first portion of this workshop focuses on heating and shaping the steel using a hammer and anvil. You will heat up your steel in our propane forge until it reaches red-hot temperatures, then use a hammer and anvil to create the profile of your knife. Continue this process until you achieve the exact shape you want. It is a fantastic workout and builds strength.

Next, you will heat the knife one more time and quench it in oil to harden the blade completely. This involves red-hot metal and usually produces a little fire when you dunk your knife into the oil. It is the ultimate Instagrammable photo or video opportunity. Ever seen the television show Forged in Fire? That is exactly what you will be doing.

After you have quenched the rough shape of your knife, you will use a grinder to refine the shape and form the bevel of your knife, which is the critical core of its cutting edge.

Once you have fully shaped your knife, you will put the finishing touches on your masterpiece: wrapping your knife handle with paracord and sharpening it to a razor-sharp edge. You will leave the workshop with a stunning piece of functional artistry, a slightly sore arm from the work, and a newfound pride in your craftsmanship and achievement.
