Build your beginning blacksmithing fundamentals while you forge out your first iron kitchen spoon! We’ll cover the basics, such as posture, hammer form, tong usage, anvil anatomy, and forge operations. As you work your spoon into shape you’ll learn skills such as drawing out, tapering, beveling, peening & spreading, filing, and how to use a swage form. We’ll also discuss how to maintain your spoon and other forged items, so you’ll have many years of usage from them.
Key Requirements and Guidelines:
- You are required to print and personally sign this waiver form before attending, with one form needed per participant.
What to Prepare and Wear:
- Clothing must be made exclusively from natural fibers; synthetic materials and blends are prohibited. Denim jeans and leather shoes are mandatory. We recommend bringing both a short-sleeved and long-sleeved shirt. Ensure that your pant legs fully cover the tops of your shoes, and inspect your clothing for any holes or damage.
- Wear only clothing items you are willing to sacrifice, as they may sustain permanent damage or staining during the forging process. Failure to follow these requirements will result in not being permitted to participate in forging activities.
- If you possess your own respirator, bring it to class; otherwise, one will be provided for you to transport to and from each session.
- When transporting knives or metal pieces, use a proper knife roll, knife case, or wrap items securely in a towel, then secure your transport container with a small luggage lock.
