This engaging and immersive workshop will introduce you to the compelling world of knifesmithing, representing the art, science, and practical skill of using controlled heat and specialized hammers, along with other essential metalworking tools, to shape raw steel into functional and beautiful blade tools. You will have the opportunity to transform a rough steel preform of premium 4140 steel into a beautiful and functional knife of your own unique design and creative vision. The blank steel preform allows and encourages you to take your knife design in a variety of different directions and styles based on your personal preferences. Learn and master how to shape a classic clip point blade, an elegant drop point design, or create some thoughtful custom blending of design elements that you personally conceive and desire for your creation.
The first portion of this hands-on workshop focuses on the essential process of heating and shaping the steel preform using traditional hammer and anvil metalworking techniques. You will heat up your steel in our professional propane forge until it reaches perfect red-hot working temperatures, then use a hammer and an anvil to methodically create the profile and outline of your knife blade design. This repetitive heating and hammering cycle continues until you achieve the exact shape and proportions you want for your knife design. This process provides an excellent full-body workout while teaching you the fundamental principles of how steel responds and behaves under heat and physical pressure.
Following the primary shaping phase, you will transition to the critical heat treatment process. You will heat the knife blade one final time in the forge to reach the precise temperature needed for optimal hardening, then quench it in specialized oil to dramatically harden the blade. This dramatic phase involves glowing red-hot metal and typically produces an exciting burst of flame when you carefully dunk your hot knife into the quenching oil. It is an unforgettable Instagrammable and highly shareable moment that creates dramatic visual and sensory memories. Have you watched the popular television show Forged in Fire? That is exactly what you will be doing and experiencing in this workshop.
After you have successfully quenched and cooled the rough shape of your knife, you will use a professional angle grinder to carefully refine the blade shape and form the essential bevel of your knife. The bevel is the angled edge surface that creates the cutting edge of your blade, and forming a proper and sharp bevel is absolutely the core of creating a functional and effective cutting tool. Our expert instructors will guide you through proper grinder technique and critical safety practices to ensure you produce a quality professional blade edge.
Once you have fully shaped and beveled your knife blade, you will put the final finishing touches on your functional masterpiece. You will wrap your knife handle with high-quality paracord material for a comfortable grip and lasting durability, and sharpen the blade to an extremely sharp, razor-sharp edge using our professional grinding and sharpening equipment. You will leave the workshop with a stunning, functional piece of metalwork artistry, a slightly sore arm from the physical effort and hammering involved, and a great newfound pride in your metalworking craftsmanship and accomplishment.
