This hands-on workshop will introduce you to the fascinating and rewarding world of knifesmithing, a practice that combines the art, science, and practical application of using heat and hammers, along with other specialized metalworking tools, to shape raw steel into functional and beautiful blades. You will transform a rough preform of premium 4140 steel into a stunning custom knife of your own unique design and vision. The blank steel preform allows you to take your knife design in a variety of different directions and styles based on your preferences. Learn how to shape a classic clip point blade, an elegant drop point design, or create some custom blending of design elements that you personally envision and desire for your hunter knife.
The first portion of this hands-on workshop focuses on the critical process of heating and shaping the steel preform using fundamental hammer and anvil techniques. You will heat up your steel in our professional propane forge until it reaches perfect red-hot temperatures for working, then use a hammer and an anvil to methodically create the profile and outline of your knife blade design. This heating and hammering cycle repeats multiple times until you achieve the exact shape and proportions you want for your hunting knife. This process provides a fantastic full-body workout and builds real metallurgical understanding of how steel behaves under heat and pressure.
Following the initial shaping phase, you will move on to the critical heat treatment process. You will heat the knife blade one more time in the forge to reach the proper temperature for hardening, then quench it in specialized oil to dramatically harden the blade. This phase involves red-hot glowing metal and typically produces an exciting burst of flame when you carefully dunk your hot knife into the quenching oil. It is the ultimate Instagrammable and unforgettable photo or video moment that you will want to capture. Have you ever seen the television show Forged in Fire? That is exactly the dramatic and satisfying process you will be experiencing firsthand in this workshop.
After you have successfully quenched and cooled the rough shape of your knife, you will use a professional angle grinder to carefully refine the blade shape and form the critical bevel of your knife. The bevel is the angled edge surface that forms the cutting edge of your blade, and creating a proper, sharp bevel is the core of producing a functional and effective cutting tool. Our instructors will guide you through proper grinder technique and safety practices to ensure you produce a quality blade edge.
Once you have fully shaped and beveled your knife blade, you will put the finishing touches on your functional masterpiece. You will wrap your knife handle with high-quality paracord material, both for grip and durability, and sharpen the blade to an extremely sharp, razor-sharp edge using our grinding and sharpening equipment. You will leave the workshop with a stunning, functional piece of metalwork artistry, a slightly sore arm from the physical effort and hammering involved, and a deep newfound pride in your craftsmanship and metallurgical accomplishment.
