Class Description

Description

Skill Level: Beginner, no previous experience needed. This intensive workshop introduces the fundamental principles of knife making, including blade profiling, beveling techniques, polishing methods, chemical etching, handle construction, and blade sharpening and honing.

What You'll Create: Craft a stunning custom knife featuring multi-colored Damascus steel. This workshop grants you the knowledge and hands-on experience to forge your own blade from raw material. You'll learn all the essential techniques required to design and fabricate a knife of exceptional quality, resulting in a beautiful, functional tool you can proudly display and use for a lifetime.

Techniques and Tools: You'll operate a variety of hand tools and power equipment to shape your blade, including bandsaws, hand files, belt grinders, orbital sanders, drill press machinery, and hand sanding blocks. During handle finishing, you'll employ belt sanders and rotary tools to refine the wood scales that form your knife's grip.

Materials and Equipment: All necessary materials and power tools are supplied as part of your workshop fee.

Workshop Highlights and Process: This hands-on experience focuses on the stock-removal knife-making method. You'll receive a high-carbon steel blank (1095/15N20 composition) that has been forge-welded into the distinctive Damascus pattern, then learn the complete process of cutting, grinding, shaping, drilling, hardening, etching, and polishing the steel into a functional knife rivaling commercial cutlery.

Select from established knife designs, including Bowie, Camp, Deba, and Hunter styles, or develop your own variation on these classics. Customize your design extensively, including sizing the handle to fit your hand perfectly. Picture your friends' amazement when they discover you personally crafted your impressive knife from raw material to finished tool.

During the first workshop phase, you'll shape the blade profile and cutting edge, then drill pin holes for your handle hardware using hand and power tools. Next, you'll heat-treat your blade in the forge and quench it in oil to harden the steel (just like on the "Forged in Fire" television series). You'll apply a short temper cycle while commencing your wooden handle design, then return to blade sanding and polishing.

Once polished to shine, you'll use acid etching to reveal the blade's beauty, darkening the 1095 steel while the 15N20 remains bright and reflective. A 45-minute break follows, giving you time to enjoy pizza from the nearby Park Slope establishments.

Following the break, you'll clean and polish the blade, install brass-pinned hardwood handle scales shaped perfectly to your grip, apply a protective finish, sharpen the blade to razor keenness, and celebrate achieving "bladesmith" status.

Alternative Knife Making Method: If traditional forging interests you (think red-hot metal, hammers, anvils, heat, striking, and repetition), explore our separate "Forge a Survival Knife" workshop for that experience.

  • Create a Legendary Damascus Steel Knife

Our expectations were absolutely exceeded. We had a phenomenal day at a perfect venue with an encouraging team that seemed to be having as much fun as we were. The team at Craftsman gave us a great day--well crafted and well managed to get us from idea to a real damascus steel knife in one awesome day. In particular--the team coached us to do the work with almost everything on our plate. Power tools, band saws, sand belts and even the forge were all available to us and the adventure into craftmanship made the day disappear. We would 100% recommend. THANK YOU!
