Class Description

Description

Explore the expansive possibilities of watercolor painting in contemporary art through experimentation with traditional and innovative techniques. This course emphasizes formal visual elements, including scale relationships, compositional structure, paint application strategies, the interplay between transparent and opaque applications, and sophisticated color mixing and theory. Beyond technical skill, students examine what creates emotional resonance in artwork and the factors that draw viewers to particular compositions. The course encourages deliberate rule-breaking and experimentation with unconventional approaches to watercolor, pushing beyond standard techniques to discover your unique artistic voice. Individual artistic development and personal growth are central to the curriculum. All experience levels are welcome to participate.

Material List:

Materials will be reviewed during the first class session; students are welcome to wait before purchasing supplies they do not already own.

  • Paper, water-based paints, and brushes are required. Rough or cold-pressed watercolor paper is preferred with a weight of 140 pounds or heavier. Arches and Fabriano are two reliable brands widely available. Paper can be purchased by the pad, individual sheets, or in rolls, depending on your desired working scale.
  • Brushes can be minimal initially. A budget-friendly 1/2" flat bristle brush and 1" flat bristle brush (each under $2, typically marketed for oil or acrylic use), along with a 4" Hake brush, provide essential variety for different techniques.
  • Water-based paints in tubes work well, though pans are equally acceptable. Palettes vary depending on personal preference. Beginning students might start simply with one yellow, one red, one blue, one green, burnt sienna, and Payne's gray, adding additional colors as needed for specific projects. Black and white gouache is recommended for creating opacity effects. Lukas brand (available at jerrysartorama.com) offers reasonable pricing for both gouache and watercolor.
  • Containers: flat, wide mixing containers are ideal for color washes and can be repurposed plates, butcher trays, or takeout containers. Multiple containers are convenient for the painting process.
  • Small plastic containers (pint or quart-sized) for holding water during painting sessions.
  • A hair dryer assists in speeding paint drying, but is not essential for successful painting.
  • A rigid, flat, lightweight surface, such as foam core with clips, secures loose paper sheets and provides a stable work platform.
School Notes:

Please note, New York School of the Arts charges a $50 one-time registration fee for students who are new to their school. This is automatically added to the cost of your enrollment (and already included in the price listed on this course). If you are a returning student to NYSA, please let us know and we will refund you $50.

  • No refunds will be made after the second class without medical documentation and no refunds will be made after a workshop begins.
  • Ceasing to attend class without notifying the school does not constitute withdrawal from class.
  • Refunds are issued in the same form as payment. Refunds are issued within thirty days from request in the form of the same payment. Registration and service fees are non-refundable.
  • Refund requests are also subject to a 5% CourseHorse processing fee.

Holidays & Canceled Lessons:

We are closed for Thanksgiving, winter, and spring break. If we must close due to the weather, we will send out an email. If classes are canceled, the instructor will work with the school office to schedule a make-up date. We do not refund/prorate for weather closure, and our make-up policy still applies.

In any event where a customer wants to cancel their enrollment and is eligible for a full refund, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from the refund amount.
