Class Description

Description

Digital Photo Academy instructors are available to accommodate personal schedules and provide a full-day experience with 5 hours of professional instruction to suit the specific needs of individual photographers and small groups.

The session typically commences with a comprehensive discussion of your specific camera equipment and photographic goals and interests, then moves into an in-the-field shooting experience that directly corresponds with your photography objectives. The shooting session can emphasize landscape, portrait, architecture or many other photographic specialties to match your personal preferences and vision.

This private session will culminate with a detailed demonstration of various post-capture workflow procedures and enhancement techniques. The time devoted to each section of the course will vary based on your individual needs and the portion of the day purchased. Both class options include a meal break to be arranged according to your scheduling preferences and timing needs.

Topics to be discussed:

Camera Discussion

Are you planning to purchase a new camera, or do you already own a camera that you expect to use as your main imaging device over an extended period? The instructor will work closely with you to better understand your camera controls if needed, and explore the extensive capabilities of your equipment in greater depth.

Is JPEG or RAW format the best selection for you, or do you require any specific image dimensions? Are you capturing photos for your website, a large print for your living room wall, or social media platforms like Facebook? Do you have a particular photographic area of focus, such as flowers, landscape, wildlife, portrait, sports, natural light, studio light, and other categories? This information will help the instructor recommend the best approaches to use your camera, including suitable lenses and accessories for your specific situation.

In-the-Field-Shooting

Your instructor has deep expertise in in-the-field-shooting and can access private locations and venues not ordinarily available to the public. Perhaps this exclusive access is not a requirement, but you feel you could benefit from professional guidance while photographing at a local zoo, an arboretum, or an antebellum mansion. Perhaps sports photography is a strong interest. If so, many Digital Photo Academy Instructors shoot for city newspapers and may have ideas and connections to local competitions for you to sharpen your abilities.

Depending on your preferred category in picture taking, from nature and wildlife to street photography, to studio portraiture, and everything in between, your instructor will design the curriculum to align with your vision and goals. Your private class will include a location that connects with your personal interests. Your instructor will offer a variety of techniques that will help you capture portfolio-worthy images. Composition is an art form, and you will develop your own personal style, but your instructor will share proven techniques that will allow you to take a composition from your mind and manifest it into the final image.

Post Capture:

After demonstrating techniques for creating powerful images, an important aspect of the photographic pursuit is learning how to organize your body of work in a way that makes for convenient retrieval and sharing. At this point in the day, your instructor will help you carefully examine each image to analyze patterns in how you see the world. Are you relying on a specific perspective? Do you tend to place the main subject in a specific portion within the frame? Do you tend to shoot close to your subject or further from your subject? As you see patterns in your shooting style, you can embrace them or change them and inevitably recognize the options in future photo ops.

In today's digital world, there are ways to compensate for mistakes and limitations that may have presented themselves in the field. Was the lighting too flat or too harsh? Did you not quite capture your frame correctly, and wish you had shot at a better angle? This session will include a selection of images shot that day with a variety of Photoshop adjustments to be demonstrated and discussed.

Richard and Alina were both amazing at getting to know me and understanding my goals. Richard was so great in keeping in contact with me to make sure he understood my passions and ensure I got exactly what I needed out of this class. I learned so much from Alina, she is awesome! She really takes the time to share her knowledgeable and taught me such helpful tips. She really guided me and photography.

I highly recommend taking this workshop if you're interested in learning photography. I took 2 workshops one on Monday and the other on Wednesday. Richard did a great job pairing me up with Steven and accomodating my specific requirements from the workshop. Steven is very knowledgable and taught me a lot about my camera and photography in general. We met at the NY Public Library on Day 1 and shot a bit at Bryant Park. On Day 2, we went shooting in Chinatown and Brooklyn Bridge. I had a great time and also enjoined our conversations about our travels and experiences.

The day lived up to my expectations. Richard was very professional and put a lot of effort into finding a tutor that matched what I was looking for. It was refreshing to still see the someone adding the personal touch to ensure the customer is happy. My tutor, Steve was great and was loads of fun to hang out with. Really cool dude. Not only did he find a stunningly gorgeous model to work with (who I would love to work with again, btw), but he happily shared from his best advice in any area that I asked about. I learnt a lot from him and identified more than a few areas that I need to work on. Rating my experience with 5 stars was easy. In fact the next time I visit New York, I will definitely be calling on Richard again.

The course and instructor were great. If I would suggest any kind of improvement it would be, perhaps, some sort of brief prerequisite reading, like digital photography basics, just so that you can start the course with at least some understanding of basic terminology, etc., so that the beginning is not quite so overwhelming. I know every class is different and based on the student’s requested itenerary, but some kind of “one-pager” for basic terminology could definitely help maximize your time with the instructor.

First off Richard Rabinowitz, the founder, made it his priority to find out what I was hoping to get out of the all-day session. He went to great lengths to make sure I was matched with the right photographer. I ended up traveling up to the academy in Newburgh (Richard picked me up from the Beacon train station), because I wanted studio lighting experience. This would avoid me having to pay to rent a studio separately. Steve Marrero was my photographer for the day and I must say that the way they planned the day for me felt more like an apprenticeship than just taking a class. Like learning a new language in the country that speaks it versus just being a classroom. I reacquainted with my camera at Richard’s use, where I was also able to setup studio lights and shoot portraits of two people that they had sit for me. The highlight of the day was when they drove me to a clothing boutique and had a model waiting to try on 3 outfits for me to photograph, with Steve’s guidance of course. It was a long but productive day and I walked away with what I needed to give my project a try on my own. I’ll be using these guys again to develop other aspects of my photography.

My Instructor was Steve G. I had an amazing day. Steve assisted me in transforming my relationship with my camera in 6 hours. I hope he had a tenth as much fun as I did. I am forever grateful.
