Class Description

Description

This 2-hour workshop introduces the basic skills of throwing pottery on the potter's wheel. No prior experience is required. Under the guidance of a skilled and patient instructor, you will learn foundational techniques and have the opportunity to create your own piece of pottery to take home.

What You Will Learn:

  • Basic techniques of pottery wheel throwing, including how to center clay and shape it into desired forms
  • Methods for creating bowl and cylinder shapes
  • Fundamentals of handling and working with clay to produce your own functional pottery pieces

Supplies and Materials:

The workshop cost includes all necessary supplies: professional instruction, clay, specialized tools, towels, glaze, and the firing of one piece per person. Additional pieces can be fired and glazed for $15 each, with cash payment accepted for amounts under $25.

Additional Workshop Information:

This class can be repeated as many times as you wish. If you have prior pottery experience, you can work on more advanced projects during the session. At the conclusion of the class, you will take home the bowl or cylinder you created. The studio will email you approximately 4 weeks after the workshop when your finished piece is ready for pickup.

Age Requirements:

Children ages 12 to 14 can participate with an accompanying adult, while students 15 years and older can attend independently. If you are booking for two or more guests, each registration must be submitted as a separate order.

Wonderful instructor who made sure everyone left with at least one piece they were happy with. I do wish it was a 3-hour class though, between a long demo at the beginning and clean up at the end, the actual throwing time felt limited.

Class was interesting and fun, but I would have preferred a little more one on one attention (class size was a bit too big)
  • One Day Wheel Throwing (Williamsburg)

The One Day Wheel Throwing class is so much fun! It’s a great place to dip your toe into a complicated art form within a fun and loving atmosphere.
  • One Day Wheel Throwing (Williamsburg)

I liked the class. It was my first experience .
  • One Day Wheel Throwing (Williamsburg)

It would be great if the instructor went through the steps a second time and also wrote it somewhere so we could easily see it while working on the wheel. It was hard to remember the steps and what the function of each step was. This would make the class more helpful. Otherwise the class and space was wonderful and I enjoyed working and meditating on the wheel.
  • One Day Wheel Throwing (Williamsburg)

The instructions were straightforward, help was available when you needed it, we had the freedom to experiment throwing with the clay. My only regret is not being able to collect mine and my wife's mini-bowls.

Class was too large for instructor to handle. Lack of follow up after initial instructions. Discouraging experience for anyone who actually has an interest in learning this skill. Would not recommend this.
