Class Description

Description

Learn how to throw clay on the potter's wheel in this NYC workshop.

What you'll do

  • Get Ready to Play with Clay
    • Step inside this light-filled Manhattan studio and get comfy. With all materials provided and expert guidance throughout, you're all set for a fun, hands-on session.
  • Meet Your Wheel
    • Get introduced to the pottery wheel and watch your expert instructor demo how it spins and how to shape your clay into something special.
  • Get Your Hands Muddy
    • Plop your clay on the wheel and feel it take shape under your fingers. You’ll learn how to center, pull and mold your very own bowl, cup or vase.
  • Shape Your Ceramic Creation
    • With help from your teacher, refine your technique and experiment with different forms. Whether it’s perfecting the cylinder or going bold with curves, you’re in total control.
  • Prep Your Piece for the Kiln
    • Once your shape is just right, you’ll tidy it up and choose your favorite piece to leave behind. The studio will glaze and kiln-fire it so it’s durable and food-safe.
  • Collect Your Clay Creation
    • Your finished ceramic will be ready for collection one week later (unless you sign up for the "no WORKS kept" option) – the perfect handmade keepsake from your time on the wheel. Works must be picked up within 14 days.

If you're curious about pottery making and want a crash course on the basics, give this NYC class a go! It's a chance for complete beginners to try their hand at wheel throwing. No experience is necessary.

In this pottery class, you will be shown the basics via a short demonstration of how to make a cup or bowl shape on the pottery wheel. Then, you'll be guided along as you try it yourself. You'll be able to try and try again until you get a piece that you love. The last fifteen minutes of class is dedicated to clean up. This class includes one fired piece per person to be picked up in one week.

Whether you're looking for date night ideas, team building activities, or just something fun to try this weekend, this pottery wheel class is a great option. Come sink your hands into some clay and make a piece of glazed pottery that you'll be sure to treasure!

What you'll get

  • Materials to work with, plus one fired piece that will be glazed for you (unless you sign up for the "no WORKS kept" option).

Knowledge required

  • None, totally beginner-friendly.

What to bring

  • Wear clothes you don't mind getting messy and tie your hair back. We suggest trimming your nails before the session and removing jewelry from your hands and wrists.

  • This class is great for individuals and couples as well as for a date idea, team building activity, birthday or bachelorette party.

This experience would also be a unique gift for her, gift for mom or gift for couples.

Note:

We are excited to share the joy of clay with you! Please note that when you book a class with us, you are paying for the instructional experience, studio time, materials, and the guidance of our instructors, rather than a guaranteed finished product.

Ceramics is an unpredictable art form that goes through many stages—from shaping and drying to complex bisque and glaze firings. While we do our very best to guide your pieces safely through the kiln, ceramics can occasionally crack, warp, or break during the firing process due to natural physical properties.

Complimentary Firing: As a complimentary part of the class experience, we include the firing and glazing for one piece per person (selected by you at the end of the session).

No Guarantees: Because of the inherent risks involved in firing pottery, finished pieces are not guaranteed, and studio fees are non-refundable in the rare event that a piece is damaged during the firing process.

We appreciate your understanding and look forward to getting our hands dirty with the creative process together!

Refund Policy

No refunds, but can reschedule if student notifies us more than 24 hours before class.

In any event where a customer wants to cancel their enrollment and is eligible for a full refund, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from the refund amount.

  • Pottery Wheel Throwing (Hell's Kitchen)

Never done this before and happy we tried this. It is definitely one of the hardest things I’ve had to do with almost nothing to show for it!!! Our instructor Amy was super patient and kind and gave clear instructions it’s definitely something you should take several classes to get better at. It was a humbling experience and I’m excited to pick up our pieces in a week. We had a lot of fun laughing at ourselves and getting clay all over and there was a lot of natural talented folks in the group who made beautiful cups vases and bowls.

  • Pottery Wheel Throwing (Hell's Kitchen)

The class was fun, but there were too many people to get enough attention from the instructor.

Great class, small and personal help. It’s tough to learn but I felt I learned a lot. I’m excited to get my piece. They were kind enough to ask if you wanted to make something specific and they helped me get to what I wanted. Only minor critique is sometimes when I asked for help, the teacher did it for me, but I wanted to learn to do it myself! All in all, I did feel like I did most of it myself though. I’m excited to see how it turns out! I recommend wholeheartedly.

Class was too big. The teacher had no time to go to each potter. The teacher also did not seem to care. She was very withdrawn. I have done a few pottery classes but this had to be worst. By the end teacher was on her phone and deflecting questions. The extra clay was not prepared. Class started late but ended on time. Waste of money.
