Class Description

Description

This course teaches students to visualize, design, and construct three-dimensional sculptures using an inventive combination of unconventional and unusual materials. Students will develop an understanding of sculptural form through direct hands-on project work, exploration of diverse artists and artistic approaches, and constructive critiques from peers and instructors. The course introduces fundamental design principles, including proportion, repetition, contrast, rhythm, balance, and movement, examining each principle specifically within the context of three-dimensional sculptural practice.

Throughout the course, you will work with materials readily available around the home for creating sculptural forms and attaching components together. This approach to material selection encourages resourcefulness, creative problem-solving, and sustainable artistic practice.

Materials to gather from your home:

  • Collectibles and found objects
  • Large quantities of the same materials for exploration
  • Recyclables of various kinds

Optional materials:

  • Hot glue gun and clear glue sticks for adhesion
  • Scissors for cutting and preparation
  • Measuring tape for precise dimensions
  • Masking tape for temporary assembly
  • Push pins for fastening
  • Utility knives and replacement blades
  • Sharpie or similar permanent marker

Additional materials you may consider:

  • Self-hardening clay for modular elements
  • Screws and fasteners for structural support
  • Epoxy glues for permanent bonding
  • Grommets for reinforcement
  • Acrylic paint for finishing and color
  • Metal leaf for surface enhancement
  • Magnets for interactive sculptural possibilities
