Stone carving skills are introduced in a carefully structured sequence throughout each month, with each new technique being taught and reinforced through focused, assigned projects that build on previous lessons.
Why this approach works:
- Students can concentrate on developing tool control and proper technique through manageable, low-pressure projects that encourage experimentation.
- Progress and skill development can be assessed through clear, measurable outcomes.
- Beginning with dedicated technique projects avoids the complexity of composition, anatomy, and emotional attachment to finished pieces that can discourage risk-taking when first learning. Once foundational skills are solid, students will integrate these artistic elements naturally as they progress.
This course welcomes beginners, though experienced carvers will discover refined techniques and new approaches that enhance their practice.
Classes meet Tuesdays from 5 to 8 p.m., with flexible monthly enrollment allowing students to progress through the sequence at their own pace. After completing four foundational projects, participants design original sculptures in consultation with the instructor. New students can begin any time, starting with the fundamentals.
Students use limestone for all projects and must purchase their own block for practice. Basic hand tools are provided by the studio.
