Class Description

Description

Discover the fundamentals of crochet in this welcoming class designed for everyone, whether you're starting completely from scratch or returning to a craft you learned years ago. If you've been curious about picking up crochet as a hobby, this is the perfect place to begin your journey.

Over the course of three hours, you'll gain the essential knowledge needed to turn yarn into beautiful fabric using just a hook and some basic techniques. By the end of this workshop, you'll have created your own warm and cozy chunky cowl while building the confidence to continue your crochet projects at home.

Key topics you'll master include:

  • Selecting appropriate yarn and crochet hooks for your projects
  • Proper techniques for starting your first crochet piece
  • Single and double crochet stitches, the building blocks of the craft
  • How to work in straight, even rows with consistent tension
  • Creating the foundation for your finished chunky scarf or cowl accessory

Materials and Supply Information:

All required materials for this class are available for purchase at our shop, both in person and online, with local pickup options. As a student, you'll receive a 10% discount on all materials. Within 24 hours of completing your registration, you'll receive a discount code that covers everything you need to bring to class.

Required Materials for Crochet 101:

  • One 12mm crochet hook
  • One ball of Crazy Sexy Wool yarn (we recommend starting with a lighter shade so you can clearly see each stitch as you learn)

Refund Policy

We do not issue refunds on workshop registrations.

  • If you register for a workshop and later become unable to attend, we will gladly offer a credit if you notify us at least 5 business days before the workshop.
  • Workshop credits are not redeemable for cash and cannot be applied to merchandise purchases
  • We are unable to offer credits of any kind, or honor reschedule requests, with less than 5 business days advance notice.
  • Credits cannot be given for any registrations for workshops hosted by visiting/ out of town instructors. Due to the nature of these one-time-only workshops, all events hosted by special guests are subject to this policy. Thank you for understanding!
  • In the event a class is cancelled or rescheduled due to inclement weather, or other Act of God, you will receive a credit to take another class at a later date (in-person or virtual).

Our workshops require a great deal of pre-planning, including ordering supplies and tools, booking staff, and making commitments to pay our instructors -- all based on the number of students who register. When students ask to cancel or reschedule at the last minute, we lose money. As a small business, we are unable to absorb these costs and still keep our class prices low.

In fairness to all of our customers, we are unable to make exceptions to our policy, including for reasons of illness or travel. If you are unable to attend a workshop at the last minute, we suggest giving your spot to a friend!

Refund Processing Fees:

  • The following only applies in the event a provider’s cancellation/refund policy allows for cancellations and a full refund, please see above or contact CourseHorse to determine eligibility.
  • In the event a class is still going to occur and a full refund is requested, and you are eligible for a full refund in accordance with the provider’s policy, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from your refund amount.

I had never even picked up a ball of yarn before -- and I have a history of being klutzy and nervous when it comes to this sort of skill. The instructor (Ginny or Jenny; I forgot to get the spelling!) was amazing -- so patient, clear, and good-natured! She anticipated what problems we might be having and tried to help us avoid them; she was very funny and reassuring. I left with about half my cowl done, which, believe me, was more than I expected! I hope to finish it at a later session, when I can count on her wise guidance. And Brooklyn Craft Company is always a fun place to shop and just hang out. I love their offerings -- they always have something fun and new to try. This was a truly enjoyable experience!

Really fun class! The teacher was fantastic, and took time to work with each individual student to make sure everything was going smoothly. I walked in with minimal experience, and walked out feeling confident with crochet. Will definitely take future classes!
  • Crochet 101: Chunky Cowl

The class was ok, and I appreciated that the instructor strived to give each person individual attention. She was also very kind. However, there was very little actual class instruction and a lot of waiting around for her to become available to help us individually. In the meantime, I was left to my own devices and did the whole scarf in the completely wrong stitch. It wasn’t until my sister in law looked at the scarf that she was able to tell right away what I had been doing incorrectly. It’s disappointing to pay $45 for a course and $50+ for material to not have the instructor tell you what you’re doing incorrectly. We also did not learn how to link the two pieces of the cowl together.
