Class Description

Description

This comprehensive 12-hour course provides students with foundational knowledge and practical skills in fabric dyeing using natural materials. You will explore various natural dye sources, learn techniques to extract vibrant colors, understand mordants and their chemical role, and master the methods required to permanently fix colors to fabric fibers. Through this class, you will develop expertise in a craft that offers creative expression and a sustainable alternative to synthetic dyes.

Our curriculum emphasizes the development of lasting technical skills rather than focusing solely on finished products. At TAC, our educational philosophy centers on equipping students with knowledge and abilities they can use throughout their lifetime. All materials needed for sample creation and learning essential techniques are provided as part of the course. For personal projects beyond the standard curriculum, students may supply additional materials according to their individual creative vision and desired outcomes.

Students enrolled in the 4-week course format receive complimentary access to Open Studio time for up to one week following the conclusion of their class, allowing them to practice and refine their newly acquired knowledge in a supportive environment with access to studio resources.

If for some reason you need to cancel a class you’ve signed up for, please note the following policies:

At least one month before class: Students may receive full refund or credit to a future class at TAC, minus a $25 processing fee for Morning/Evening Series, Weekend Intensive, One Day Classes and 4-Week Classes, and a $10 processing fee for After Workshops.

Less than one month before class: Students may receive credit only to a future class at TAC, minus a $25 processing fee for Morning/Evening Series, Weekend Intensive, and 4-Week Classes, One Day Classes and a $10 processing fee for After Workshops. We are unable to offer refunds with less than one month notice.

All requests for refunds or class credits must be made in writing via email to [email protected]. In addition to the timing guidelines above, we of course appreciate as much notice as possible when making any adjustments to registrations.

Coursehorse students will need to contact Coursehorse directly about cancellations or refunds. TAC cancellation policy will apply.

All classes, workshops, special events, and gift certificates are non-transferable. No refunds will be given on Gift Certificates. Gift Certificates are valid for (1) one year from the date of purchase.

Excellent class with a knowledgeable teacher. Thoroughly reviewed natural dyeing techniques and spent hours doing various types of hand dyeing. At the end of the class we each had a book of documented samples and several yards of cloth. Wonderful!!

The instructor was wonderful - very passionate and knowledgeable about dyes, encouraging and accommodating! I would absolutely learn from her again. The class size was good, and the Textile Center was easy to find. The reason I gave fewer stars is that I don't think it was worth the expensive price for two days. We spent most of the second day doing Shibori folding, which is very interesting, but I wish we had focused more time on extracting natural pigments and dyeing samples for reference so we could learn more about making dyes on our own. This especially because it's pretty easy to find Shibori workshops, but Natural Dyeing is a lot more rare, so I was disappointed that the majority of the course wasn't spent on that exclusively. Pots and supplies weren't prepared beforehand, so a lot of the time it was a scramble to get everything we needed, and they had someone cleaning out old projects from the area and people walked through the space a lot during classtime, which was really distracting in such a small space. Overall the class gave interesting information, but I think it is overpriced. I think it would work better as a one-day dyeing intensive for half of the cost. I feel bad saying it because the instructor was so awesome, but I do regret spending so much on what ended up being a very casual setup.

The class was awesome! The instructor, Natalie was very nice to answer all the questions and instructions were very clear. It was sad though that the garden was no longer available because it would have been awesome to be able to go out and pick flowers to dye them. But the class is still very recommended!
