Class Description

Description

Ready to elevate your garment sewing skills to the next level? This comprehensive five-week course guides you through creating a pair of Helen's Closet falconer pants, a versatile and stylish garment that will become a wardrobe favorite.

Conquer your fear of zippers by learning to construct a professional zipper fly. The falconer pant design also includes belt loops and side panels with set-in pockets, offering plenty of opportunities to master essential sewing techniques. You can choose between a wide leg or cropped barrel leg style to suit your preferences. The effortlessly cool fit and thoughtful design details make these pants a rewarding project that showcases your growing sewing skills.

Under the guidance of our resident sewing expert, you'll learn the fundamentals of pants construction and fitting while mastering several garment-sewing techniques that will serve you well on future projects.

Core Topics Covered:

  • Taking accurate body measurements to achieve a perfect fit
  • Working with intermediate commercial patterns, including size selection, understanding pattern instructions, cutting pieces from paper patterns, and related skills
  • Understanding essential garment sewing basics, such as proper fabric preparation, pinning techniques, cutting accuracy, ironing practices, and troubleshooting common issues
  • Learning sewing terminology commonly found in commercial patterns
  • Mastering the topstitch technique
  • Sewing techniques for zipper flies, curved waistbands, belt loops, and side panels with set-in pockets

Materials You'll Need:

The pants pattern and materials are not included in the registration fee. We stock a variety of fabrics and all necessary notions available for purchase at a 10 percent student discount. Feel free to visit anytime before your class, or place an online order for store pickup. You will need:

  • Falconer pants pattern by Helen's Closet. You can purchase the printed pattern here. You must download, print, and assemble the pattern before attending class.
  • 2.5 to 4.5 yards of fabric, depending on your size and desired length (see the size chart in the photos above). Heavy fabrics like denim, twill, and canvas create a structured pant, while softer fabrics like linen and chambray produce a lighter, more relaxed fit.
  • 17mm button or jeans button
  • Pants zipper matching your size (see the size chart in photos above)
  • A spool of all-purpose sewing thread in a matching color
  • 1 yard of lightweight fusible interfacing

Prerequisites:

Intermediate sewing experience is required for this course. You must be comfortable working independently on a sewing machine and have sewn several garments recently.

Important Pattern Information:

This is a print-at-home PDF pattern available exclusively through Helen's Closet at helensclosetpatterns.com. Students must download, print, and assemble the pattern before attending class. To save time, you can have the pattern professionally printed at a large-format copy shop such as Brooklyn Motif.

Refund Policy

We do not issue refunds on workshop registrations.

  • If you register for a workshop and later become unable to attend, we will gladly offer a credit if you notify us at least 5 business days before the workshop.
  • Workshop credits are not redeemable for cash and cannot be applied to merchandise purchases
  • We are unable to offer credits of any kind, or honor reschedule requests, with less than 5 business days advance notice.
  • Credits cannot be given for any registrations for workshops hosted by visiting/ out of town instructors. Due to the nature of these one-time-only workshops, all events hosted by special guests are subject to this policy. Thank you for understanding!
  • In the event a class is cancelled or rescheduled due to inclement weather, or other Act of God, you will receive a credit to take another class at a later date (in-person or virtual).

Refund Processing Fees:

  • The following only applies in the event a provider’s cancellation/refund policy allows for cancellations and a full refund, please see above or contact CourseHorse to determine eligibility.
  • In the event a class is still going to occur and a full refund is requested, and you are eligible for a full refund in accordance with the provider’s policy, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from your refund amount.
