Class Description

Description

If you've been wanting to learn to sew patchwork quilts, this is the class for you!

During this four-hour hands-on session, instructor Diana Rogers will guide students through the fundamentals of beginner patchwork, teaching the essential technique of joining small fabric pieces to create larger visual compositions.

In this class, you'll learn:

  • How to design and assemble a log cabin quilt block
  • Beginner-level patchwork basics
  • How to accurately cut fabric with a rotary cutter and a cutting mat
  • How to assemble your fabric pieces (you must have machine sewing experience; see below)
  • How to iron in quilting
  • The specific cutting and assembly methods used in a simple quilt block
  • We will provide cutting mats, rotary cutters, and rulers to share.
  • Each student will have access to their own sewing machine courtesy of BERNINA of America
  • Students will work toward making a small quilt top-- either one jumbo quilt block, or several smaller blocks

Want to make a complete quilt from the blocks you make in this workshop? Come back for our Beginner Quilting Workshop, where you'll learn how to assemble your "quilt sandwich" with batting and binding. Register for both and save $20! Just use code QUILTPARTY at checkout! Please note: You would likely need to spend some time sewing at home or at Open Sewing Hours to make your patchwork piece large enough for the quilting workshop project.

Skill Requirements:

  • Please note this is not a learn-to-sew class.
  • Students must have basic machine sewing knowledge and be comfortable using a sewing machine.
  • If you do not know how to sew, please take one of our Sewing 101 classes as a prerequisite to this class.

Materials:

Materials needed for class are available to be purchased at our shop at a 10% student discount.

For Patchwork, you will need:

  • The minimum amount of quilting cotton to start with is at least 1.5 yds total (3 half yards) of fabrics you like the look of together. Depending on your design, you might want several more print options! You are welcome to buy/bring more than that or add on as you go in class. This is a very common approach, as the overall composition and design may come together as you are working on your project.
  • 1 spool of Thread *note that the thread will all be on the back of your patchwork, but can show through, so if you are using mostly light fabrics, pick a light color, if mostly dark, grab a darker color

Fabric will be available to purchase during class at a 10% discount to workshop attendees.

Refund Policy

We do not issue refunds on workshop registrations.

  • If you register for a workshop and later become unable to attend, we will gladly offer a credit if you notify us at least 5 business days before the workshop.
  • Workshop credits are not redeemable for cash and cannot be applied to merchandise purchases
  • We are unable to offer credits of any kind, or honor reschedule requests, with less than 5 business days advance notice.
  • Credits cannot be given for any registrations for workshops hosted by visiting/ out of town instructors. Due to the nature of these one-time-only workshops, all events hosted by special guests are subject to this policy. Thank you for understanding!
  • In the event a class is cancelled or rescheduled due to inclement weather, or other Act of God, you will receive a credit to take another class at a later date (in-person or virtual).

Our workshops require a great deal of pre-planning, including ordering supplies and tools, booking staff, and making commitments to pay our instructors -- all based on the number of students who register. When students ask to cancel or reschedule at the last minute, we lose money. As a small business, we are unable to absorb these costs and still keep our class prices low.

In fairness to all of our customers, we are unable to make exceptions to our policy, including for reasons of illness or travel. If you are unable to attend a workshop at the last minute, we suggest giving your spot to a friend!

Refund Processing Fees:

  • The following only applies in the event a provider’s cancellation/refund policy allows for cancellations and a full refund, please see above or contact CourseHorse to determine eligibility.
  • In the event a class is still going to occur and a full refund is requested, and you are eligible for a full refund in accordance with the provider’s policy, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from your refund amount.

  • Beginner Patchwork

I had a great experience with this class. We learned how to make a log cabin quilt block. The teacher explained different ways to arrange colors to create different effects. I used some fabric that I had brought, and then I also purchased some during the class to complement the design. They had really cute fabrics in the store and it was fun to look around. This class got me into quilting. I am making my own full size quilt now.
  • Beginner Patchwork

It was nice to be there. Everyone was friendly and the teacher was excellent! I am looking forward to take another class
