Sewing 101: Basics (New Jersey)

Ready to learn how to sew but unsure where to start? Whether your sewing machine is still in the box or you simply want clear, beginner-friendly guidance, this Sewing 101 course walks you through every essential skill. You will build confidence step by step as you learn the basics, practice core techniques, and complete your first wearable project.

Materials Needed

• Students should bring their own fabric. Details on fabric types and yardage will be shared during the first class.
• Each student is responsible for purchasing personal sewing supplies. A full supply list is provided at the first session.
• All tools needed for the first class will be available on-site.

What You Will Learn

• Common sewing terms and how to use essential tools safely and correctly.
• How to read and understand a commercial sewing pattern from setup to final stitch.
• How to choose suitable fabrics for beginner projects, such as skirts or drawstring pants.
• How to assemble a drawstring bag and how to create and insert a waistband.
• How to locate and work with fabric grain lines for accurate cutting.
• How to sew more than six different stitches and seam finishes using a sewing machine.

Course Format

• In-person options include either 2 hours per week for 6 weeks or 3 hours per week for 4 weeks, totaling 12 hours of instruction.
• Virtual classes include 8 hours of live instruction and come with supplies. Students may join with or without their own sewing machine.
