Class Description

Description

Build your sewing skills and make a classic wardrobe staple: a zip-up hoodie!

This workshop will be a hybrid virtual/ in-person format. All of the sewing will take place at our shop-- no worries if you don't have a machine at home or if you can't make it to the live virtual session!  Here's how the schedule will look:

Friday 10/20 at 6:30pm-7:30pm - This will be a virtual info session taking place on Zoom. Your instructor will discuss pattern details and demonstrate how to cut your fabric. Your homework will be to complete all of the fabric cutting/ prep before we meet in person. The Zoom will be recorded, so you'll be able to access the video if you can't attend live or if you need to reference it while you're cutting fabric!

Sunday 10/22 at 11:00am - 6:00pm - This part will take place at our Greenpoint shop! During this time we will work on the hoodie construction. All fabric must be cut and ready to sew upon arrival.

In this hybrid virtual/ in-person workshop, we'll be working with the Halifax Hoodie from Hey June Handmade. You'll learn how to:

Follow best practices for using a commercial sewing pattern, including size selection, cutting from pattern pieces, and more

  • Sew heavier weight stretchy knit fabrics on a standard sewing machine (not a serger)
  • Install a separating zipper in a garment
  • Insert a drawstring
  • Please note: We will be making View C only in the workshop.

Fabric and other supplies will be available for purchase in our retail shop & on our website at a 10% discount to students. The PDF pattern can be purchased here! We'll cover printing/assembling the pattern in the virtual session, but as an alternative, we highly recommend having the pattern printed by our friends at Brooklyn Motif!

Required Materials:

  • Halifax Hoodie PDF Pattern
  • 2 yards Fleece, sweatshirt fleece (more stock arriving at our shop mid-September!), interlock, french terry, and other heavier weight knit fabrics at least 55” wide. Should be washed before cutting/ sewing!
  • Separating Zipper - See size chart in photos to determine length needed.
  • 2 yards of 1-inch twill tape
  • 1 spool of all-purpose sewing thread
  • 1/2" twill tape or other cording for the drawstring
  • Fabric Scissors

All other tools needed for construction will be available for use at our shop the day of class.

Skill requirements:

This is a confident beginner garment sewing workshop; you must have basic machine-sewing skills and have sewn projects in the recent past. Our Sewing 101 class (or equivalent) is a minimum prerequisite for this class. If you're unsure whether you have enough sewing experience for this class, please send a brief email summarizing your sewing experience to [email protected].

Refund Policy

We do not issue refunds on workshop registrations.

  • If you register for a workshop and later become unable to attend, we will gladly offer a credit if you notify us at least 5 business days before the workshop.
  • Workshop credits are not redeemable for cash and cannot be applied to merchandise purchases
  • We are unable to offer credits of any kind, or honor reschedule requests, with less than 5 business days advance notice.
  • Credits cannot be given for any registrations for workshops hosted by visiting/ out of town instructors. Due to the nature of these one-time-only workshops, all events hosted by special guests are subject to this policy. Thank you for understanding!
  • In the event a class is cancelled or rescheduled due to inclement weather, or other Act of God, you will receive a credit to take another class at a later date (in-person or virtual).

Our workshops require a great deal of pre-planning, including ordering supplies and tools, booking staff, and making commitments to pay our instructors -- all based on the number of students who register. When students ask to cancel or reschedule at the last minute, we lose money. As a small business, we are unable to absorb these costs and still keep our class prices low.

In fairness to all of our customers, we are unable to make exceptions to our policy, including for reasons of illness or travel. If you are unable to attend a workshop at the last minute, we suggest giving your spot to a friend!

Refund Processing Fees:

  • The following only applies in the event a provider’s cancellation/refund policy allows for cancellations and a full refund, please see above or contact CourseHorse to determine eligibility.
  • In the event a class is still going to occur and a full refund is requested, and you are eligible for a full refund in accordance with the provider’s policy, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from your refund amount.
