Class Description

Description

Build your sewing skills! Join us and learn to sew with knit fabrics. It will open up a world of possibilities for making your own stretchy garments, from t-shirts and undies to tunics and dresses!

You'll learn the basics of sewing knits, while also learning how to use a commercial pattern as you create this super cute and versatile tank!

In this class, you'll learn how to:

  • Work from a sewing pattern, including size selection, cutting from pattern pieces, and more
  • How to sew knit fabrics on a standard sewing machine (not a serger)
  • Understand stretchy sewing basics such as proper fabric prep, pinning, cutting, ironing, thread and needle choice, machine settings, and trouble shooting
  • Cut fabric and assemble a garment the right way

We'll be working with the Luna Tank by Helen's Closet in this class.

Note:

  • This is a free pattern, but you must download, print and assemble it prior to class.
  • Check out Helen's Closet's super helpful tutorial on how to do this. Don't worry if you've never assembled a pattern yourself before. Another option is to have the pattern printed at a copy shop such as Brooklyn Motif.

Skill Requirements:

  • This is a confident beginner garment sewing workshop; you do not need to have any experience sewing clothing, but you must have basic machine-sewing skills.
  • Our Sewing 101 class (or equivalent) is a prerequisite for this class.

Materials:

Materials needed for class are available to be purchased at our shop at a 10% student discount. Materials are not included in registration fee.

You will need:

  • The Luna Tank Pattern by Helen's Closet. You must download, print and assemble the pattern prior to coming to class!
  • 1.5-2.5 yards (depending on your size and pattern view chosen) of a Four-way stretch knit with at least 20% stretch horizontally and vertically (see the stretch chart on page 3 of the pattern). The Luna Tank works best in a lightweight knit fabric with plenty of drape like bamboo jersey, rayon jersey, modal jersey, lightweight cotton jersey, ITY or rib knits. We are expecting more knit fabrics in the shop by the last week of June. To determine the amount of fabric required please consult the size chart in the pattern/class posting after taking your measurements and choose which view of the tank you'd like to make. Note that sewing pattern sizes are not comparable to off the rack.
  • Matching all-purpose Thread

Please note it is always advisable to pre-wash any fabric being used for garment sewing as many fabrics can shrink To prewash, simply wash and dry the fabric as you would the finished garment. If you buy fabric the day-of class and can't pre-wash (very common for classroom settings!), please keep in mind that finished garments must always be washed cold and line dried to prevent shrinkage-- which is generally advisable with stretchy knits regardless.

Refund Policy

We do not issue refunds on workshop registrations.

  • If you register for a workshop and later become unable to attend, we will gladly offer a credit if you notify us at least 5 business days before the workshop.
  • Workshop credits are not redeemable for cash and cannot be applied to merchandise purchases
  • We are unable to offer credits of any kind, or honor reschedule requests, with less than 5 business days advance notice.
  • Credits cannot be given for any registrations for workshops hosted by visiting/ out of town instructors. Due to the nature of these one-time-only workshops, all events hosted by special guests are subject to this policy. Thank you for understanding!
  • In the event a class is cancelled or rescheduled due to inclement weather, or other Act of God, you will receive a credit to take another class at a later date (in-person or virtual).

Our workshops require a great deal of pre-planning, including ordering supplies and tools, booking staff, and making commitments to pay our instructors -- all based on the number of students who register. When students ask to cancel or reschedule at the last minute, we lose money. As a small business, we are unable to absorb these costs and still keep our class prices low.

In fairness to all of our customers, we are unable to make exceptions to our policy, including for reasons of illness or travel. If you are unable to attend a workshop at the last minute, we suggest giving your spot to a friend!

Refund Processing Fees:

  • The following only applies in the event a provider’s cancellation/refund policy allows for cancellations and a full refund, please see above or contact CourseHorse to determine eligibility.
  • In the event a class is still going to occur and a full refund is requested, and you are eligible for a full refund in accordance with the provider’s policy, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from your refund amount.
