Class Description

Description

Prospect Park offers an exceptional variety of wild edible plants during mid-spring, far more than can be covered in four hours. Our foraging journey begins at the Grand Army Plaza entrance, where we identify and taste spicy hedge mustard, corn-flavored chickweed, and spinach-flavored lamb's quarters.

As we move through the park along the path near the Vale of Cashmere and other sections, we encounter goutweed, an invasive European herb with flavors reminiscent of parsley, celery, and carrots. We continue sampling sweet-sour redbud flowers and discover the asparagus-flavored Devil's walkingstick trees growing alongside sour Japanese knotweed shoots.

Meeting Place:

We will meet at the entrance of the park at Grand Army Plaza, at the stone benches next to the street that runs through the park, between the columns with the eagles. Not under the traffic circle and not in front of the library.

Important Information:

  • Bring lunch, a pen, plastic bags, paper bags, containers, closed shoes (poison ivy is present), appropriate weather clothing, and drinking water. Digging implements are suggested. Children and well-behaved dogs are welcome.
  • Dress appropriately for the weather and be aware that subway service can be unreliable with frequent track work cancellations.
  • Avoid sandals due to mosquitoes, thorns, and poison ivy.
  • Bring plastic bags for vegetables and herbs, paper bags for mushrooms (which deteriorate in plastic), containers for berries (available late spring through fall), water, lunch, and extra layers for cold weather. Digging implements and pocket knives are optional.
  • Dogs and children are welcome and encouraged to participate.
  • Smoking is prohibited at all times.
School Notes:

If you can't attend the class you signed up for, please call or email "Wildman" Steve Brill a day before the start of the class. No-call/no-show creates an inconvenience to all participants since we can’t tell if absentees are having transportation issues, and this delays the start of the tour/class.

Kindly note that price posted is our suggested donation only.

Please call your guide Steve at (914) 400-9135 the night before to confirm your class/tour will still be happening at its intended time as various circumstances may affect the start time.

Refund Policy

  • Participants can cancel 2 business days before an event and get a refund less a 5% nonrefundable registration fee.
  • If the participant failed to show up in the tour or failed to notify about their absence 2 business days before the class, they will be required to pay a $25 penalty per person before being allowed on another tour.
  • In any event where a customer wants to cancel their enrollment and is eligible for a full refund, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from the refund amount.

  • Prospect Park (Kids 12 & Under)

Excellent course! Only issue was actually finding the in-person foraging class, which was meeting in a crowded public area without sufficiently specific location details and no instructor contact details on the Coursehorse website or emailed course registration confirmation. Luckily the instructor's name was mentioned on the Coursehorse website, and I was able to do and online search, find his contact info and reach him by phone to locate the class so my daughter and I could get there before they departed into the woods for the class. Coursehorse should provide better class meeting location details and instructor contact information on their website and emailed course registration confirmations.
