Class Description

Description

This is a hands-on, project-based intensive for filmmakers who are ready to direct their own documentary. Over six sessions, participants develop every element of their creative vision - from the initial idea through to a fully articulated directing approach - drawing on the same tools and frameworks used by working directors making films for major platforms.

The emphasis is on creative decision-making: how do you develop a point of view that is distinctly yours? How do you translate what is in your head into a visual and editorial language your crew can execute? How do you stay true to your vision when you are on location, under pressure, or deep in an edit? Every session is built around participants' own projects, so the work they produce is immediately applicable.

Topics:

  • Honing your vision
  • Visual language
  • The Visual Deck
  • Directing on location
  • Handling an edit

Prerequisite:

  • Early- to mid-career filmmakers actively developing a documentary project.
  • Some prior filmmaking experience is helpful but not required.
  • This intensive is designed for people who are ready to direct their own film and want a structured, practical framework for doing so.
