You already possess improvisational skills, but have you ever applied them to music? Absolutely, you can.
This advanced class introduces improvisers with at least one previous level of training to the art of creating fully formed narrative musicals spontaneously and in real-time. Each class session opens with varied rhythmic, rhyming, and listening exercises that build your musical vocabulary. You will then delve deep into each element of narrative structure essential to storytelling. Students will master the craft of developing strong protagonists, compelling antagonists, charming scenes, and satisfying finales. Additionally, you will build a versatile toolbox of musical techniques, including fugues, chorus-verse structures, and other sophisticated musical forms. Strong singing voices are not required; what matters most is your willingness to embrace and express your inner diva in a joyful, supportive, and celebratory atmosphere.
This class culminates in a public performance.
Prerequisite: Completion of BCC Level 1 Improv, or equivalent training from a major comedy theater, including UCB, PIT, Magnet, Squirrel, Second City, iO, Annoyance, and similar established institutions; or comparable prior professional training
Please Note: BCC's Musical Improv 1 program concludes with a full-length improvised musical performance, which is why we require a full-length Improv 1 class as a prerequisite. Our musical improv curriculum moves at a faster pace than most other theaters' offerings. Because this is an advanced program, we do not permit students to skip ahead to Musical Improv 2. Trust us, you will be thoroughly challenged and engaged.
Additional Notes: Classes may end 30 minutes earlier than the scheduled time, depending on the number of students enrolled in the session.
