Class Description

Description

Bob Dylan: The Times They Are A-Changin' and the Politics of Song

“By 1962, Greenwich Village had become world headquarters for a folk music scene that, to its own occasional shock and horror, was beginning to matter in the music and popular culture business,” wrote the critic David Hinckley.

“What made the Village folk community matter beyond itself, however, was that it had become an important certified subgroup within two larger movements: civil rights and peace. Both of these movements valued a folk-music soundtrack….” The Times They Are A-Changin’, Dylan’s third studio album, released in January 1964, emphasized what Dylan called “topical” songs. But unlike most topical songs of the era, Dylan’s lyrics probe the complexities, ambiguities and complicities of injustice, racism, economic inequality and the need for social change. Furthermore, in defiance of expectations, three songs on the album, including its last track, Restless Farewell, hint at the more personal path Dylan’s writing would soon follow.

This event is part of The Beatles and Bob Dylan 1962 — 1965: A Musical Revolution in 8 Parts

When Bob Dylan and The Beatles released their first recordings in 1962, no one could have anticipated the artistic revolution in popular music that would soon follow — a revolution that would subsequently influence all musical genres. Dylan would transform the concept of song, bringing a previously unimagined poetic character and range of subject matter to the medium, influencing every songwriter who would follow, including The Beatles. The Beatles would bring a musical sophistication to rock ’n roll songwriting and arranging, transform the entire medium of recording, and inspire Dylan to plug in an electric guitar and begin playing with a band. It all happens between 1962 and 1965 — A Musical Revolution in 8 Parts.
