Description

Sacred Steel is a musical tradition which originated in African-American Pentecostal churches in the Southeast in the early decades of the 20th century. From there it has grown into a worldwide phenomenon and remains one of the most vital and exuberant musical expressions to have emerged from the United States. Workshop participants will learn some of the history of the genre as well as discover the specific techniques that steel players use to achieve their unique sound.

Please note that the workshop is open to instrumentalists, singers, and enthusiasts of all levels; you do not need to play steel to attend. Guitar, bass, drums, keys, and vocals all have a role in the tradition, and even non-musicians will benefit from hearing the music broken down to its elements and gaining insights about its history.
