Class Description

Description

This introductory SQL course establishes essential competencies in database querying through hands-on practical training. You will develop the ability to navigate and explore the tables, columns, and data rows stored within database systems, and gain the skills to write and execute SQL queries that systematically extract information for analysis and reporting. Working with practical, real-world exercises guided by experienced instruction, you will build a comprehensive understanding of relational database architecture and develop proficiency in writing functional SQL code.

You will master the foundational SELECT statement syntax to retrieve specific columns from database tables and develop filtering techniques using WHERE conditions combined with AND/OR operators, IN statements, and NOT operators. You will learn to apply wildcard pattern matching as well as mathematical comparison operators, including equals, greater than, and less than, to precisely target the data you require. You will learn to consolidate data from multiple related tables through inner JOIN operations.

Upon successful completion of this practical introductory course, you will have developed the capability to write fundamental SQL queries compatible with Microsoft SQL Server. You will gain familiarity with SQL Server Management Studio, a free graphical tool for database exploration and query execution. The foundational concepts and syntax patterns you learn through SQL Server training are transferable to other SQL database systems, including Microsoft Access, PostgreSQL, MySQL, and others, with only minor syntax adjustments required.

The class size was small, The instructor was knowledgeable and thorough, and very kind. However we didn't get a chance to do any labs/practice on our own - I believe that the best way of learning is practicing with the instructor, then independently, and then going over the labs together.
