Class Description

Description

This intensive two-day course is built around a small, complete color-grading sequence that you can keep as a reference after class concludes. You will work through the entire project workflow from beginning to end, exploring not only DaVinci Resolve's capabilities but also employing general colorist strategies and techniques. By the end of the course, you will have completed a finished project and high-quality stills to support your continued learning beyond the classroom.

What You Will Learn:

  • Starting with dailies and creating a graded look for editing directly from raw camera files
  • Creating custom LUTs, exporting LUTs, and custom looks for reuse
  • Rendering ProRes or DNxHD codec files for offline editing workflows, and H.264 for web distribution
  • Exporting XML or AAF files from Premiere Pro and executing successful round-trip workflows
  • Conforming ProRes media in Resolve using XML files and troubleshooting common conforming issues
  • Importing audio in WAV format and comparing your conform against the offline reference movie
  • Transitioning to raw camera files for final color grading
  • Understanding the tradeoffs between "Conform" and "Bake" workflows and their respective advantages and disadvantages
  • Determining optimal starting points for primary color grading
  • Performing primary grading using three-way color correctors, curves, and logarithmic color space techniques
  • Creating custom looks and previewing them across the entire timeline using split-screen mode
  • Evaluating and integrating plugin-based visual effects into the colorist workflow
  • Executing advanced secondary grading, including keying, window tracking, and animation techniques
  • Managing VFX shots inserted into the color timeline
  • Resolving audio issues and applying optical flow corrections
  • Utilizing the new RGB node for enhanced color control
  • Incorporating external mattes to support color correction objectives
  • Rendering final output to 709/DCP standards for delivery

Each student receives their own dedicated workstation for hands-on practice throughout the course.
