Class Description

Description

Reimagine and restore this beloved classic by disassembling, refurbishing, and revitalizing a vintage Game Boy through engaging hands-on electronics experimentation and restoration techniques.

Required Experience Level: Beginner; previous electronics experience is not necessary.

The Project You'll Complete: You will undertake a complete restoration and upcycling transformation of a classic vintage Game Boy.

Techniques You'll Learn: CNC router operation, soldering and desoldering components, thorough cleaning and maintenance, and electrical rewiring procedures

What Materials and Equipment Are Provided: All necessary materials, components, and tools are included at no extra cost.

  • Your Vintage Game Boy Unit: We supply a vintage Game Boy in need of substantial restoration work and ready for comprehensive renovation. THE GAMEBOY HANDHELD IS FULLY INCLUDED IN YOUR WORKSHOP PRICE.
  • CNC Router Equipment: Gain practical experience operating a CNC routing machine to cut and shape the device shell for accommodating the modern LCD display screen.
  • Professional Instruction: Receive detailed, sequential guidance from skilled and experienced maker educators.

What To Anticipate During the Workshop:

Abandoned for decades and suffering from significant deterioration, including a non-functional screen and heavily oxidized battery contacts, the Gameboy DMG units we restore during this workshop have clearly experienced considerable wear, yet by the conclusion of our collaborative effort, they will be fully restored and prepared for another three decades of reliable operation. We begin by carefully disassembling your Game Boy down to its essential core component, the circuit board. As we work toward restoring electrical function, we will discuss fundamental concepts of analog electronics, Ohm's Law principles, and multimeter operation and measurement techniques.

Subsequently, you will gain hands-on experience with CNC router technology, which we will utilize to modify and shape the Gameboy shell to properly accommodate the contemporary backlit LCD screen you will be installing within the device.

While the prepared shells undergo thorough cleaning and restoration, the reassembly process commences with fundamental electronics soldering techniques serving as the initial step. Following this, assembly primarily becomes a matter of methodically installing each component back into its designated location within the device shell.

Upon class completion, you will have produced a professionally restored Game Boy DMG featuring a brilliantly illuminated LCD display that represents a dramatic improvement compared to the original factory display. These restored devices serve as excellent conversation pieces and deliver countless hours of engaging 8-bit retro gaming enjoyment with timeless classics such as Mario, Zelda, and Pokémon. Moreover, you will possess the satisfaction and recognition that comes from explaining to others that you personally constructed and restored your own Game Boy.
