Ready to elevate your sewing skills to a professional level? If you have been sewing for years but continue to rely on commercial patterns, or if you have just completed Sewing 101 and are prepared to master the next phase of pattern design, this course is your next step. In this comprehensive class, you will learn to draft and create custom skirt patterns based on your own body measurements, resulting in perfectly fitted garments tailored specifically to your unique proportions.
Course Learning Objectives:
- Create a custom pattern using your individual body measurements
- Understand techniques and terminology essential to professional pattern development
- Draft a pattern using proper measurement methods
- Accurately measure your body and identify the correct measurements for pattern drafting
- Construct a finished skirt using your custom-designed pattern
- Develop a skirt sloper template for use in future sewing projects
Final Project: Custom-fitted skirt pattern and garment created entirely from your own design and measurements.
Required Supplies and Materials: Two yards of pattern paper, a mechanical pencil, an eraser, a tracing wheel, matte finish scotch tape, and two yards of muslin for test construction. You will also need fabric for the finished skirt, which you can select later in the course; this is not required on the first class day. Measurement and planning happen first.
Prerequisite: Sewing 101 or equivalent sewing experience with familiarity using commercial patterns. If you have substantial sewing experience and want to discuss alternative starting points, please email the instructor before registering.
