Class Description

Description

If you've ever wondered where to get the best Indian spices in Brooklyn, then wonder no more. Join us for, our half-day Indian Spice Tour. During this class, we’ll walk to nearby Bangladeshi and Pakistani stores along Coney Island, McDonald and Church Avenues. After shopping for our ingredients, with me (Mukti) as your guide, we will return to my kitchen to prepare a wonderful meal for us to enjoy as we relax and talk about our adventure.

After we cook our meal, we'll sit down and eat together, and savor the dinner as well as the spices. You'll know so much more about the qualities, quantities, and various attributes of the spices that you now can use in your own cooking. And feel happy and comfortable about it. Throughout history, spices have held an important value in Indian cuisine. It is one of the most wonderful groups of ingredients ever given to any cook.

Anyone can use spices to cook any kind of dish, but not everyone knows how to use them to their fullest potential. Walking down the spice aisle, there are a lot of powdered spices from all types of brand ranging from expensive to cheap. We might assume that maybe the one that costs the most is the best. However, the best powdered spices are the ones that we grind ourselves. In our Indian Spice Tour, we will be visiting Bangladeshi and Pakistani stores near my kitchen, where you will learn how to pick out the best spices for a good price.

In this spice tour with me, I will teach you everything you need to know about spices, and you will then become a spice expert. After our spice trip and knowing more about spices, we will go back to my kitchen, where everything you just learn will be put to use. We will begin with grinding spices into powdered form, and from there you will be able to smell the differences between store- bought and homemade spices.

Then we will proceed to cook a few dishes using the spices you just ground, because freshly-ground spices bring the most flavor out of each dish. At the end, we will sit down and enjoy the food we just made.

After this spice tour and cooking class, not only will you know how to cook Indian food, but you will also realize that grinding the spices at home makes every dish more flavorful and that it is also cost-efficient.

Great class! A fun stroll through the neighborhood for spice shopping and learning more about how to choose / find high quality spices. Finished up with some hands on cooking at Mukti's home to prepare 3 dishes - great concepts and basis for starting to experiment at home.

Great instruction. Not too much, not too little. Great food as well. I highly recommend this course.
  • Half Day Indian Spice Tour and Hands-on Cooking

This was one of the best classes I've ever taken, and I've taken a bunch (pottery, welding, glassblowing, stunt jumping, pie making etc.). Mukti is such a gracious host and her hospitality is soothing for the soul. She is knowledgeable, authentic, patient and sincere. Her food is a song in your mouth! She taught us about spices, what to look for; the stores to purchase these spices and the health benefits of many of the spices. We asked so many questions about the products in the stores and she took her time to explain everything. To quote her, "Pour your love into it and close the circle of the dish with the spice used for seasoning while cooking as a finishing touch on top-full circle." The dishes were amazing and the rice was so fluffy. I actually didn't want to leave her home- yes we were in her home! Additionally, the Indian spice company SWAD should sponsor her! In closing, this was a memorable experience (a memory) and I would give Muktiskitchen and Mukti my highest recommendation. I want to take more of her classes and am looking forward to giving this class as gifts to friends and family. It was an honor to meet such an amazing human and chef!

Loved Mukti's class! She showed us the spices used in Indian food. More than that—she showed us how to choose the best quality spices and where to find them.
  • Half Day Indian Spice Tour and Hands-on Cooking

This class was perfection! We’ve taken cooking classes all over Europe - who knew the best would be in our own backyard?!? We’re telling everyone about Mukti, and picking out more classes to take from her. Are there more than 5 stars? She IS a star!

Cooking with Mukti is an AMAZING experience! I have always been intimidated by cooking Indian food (it just seemed too complex!). I signed up for Mukti's Spice Tour and she took us around the neighborhood and showed us how to recognize quality ingredients - we then returned to her home to actually cook a delicious meal. Mukti showed us cooking techniques that simplified the process - but my favorite part was her enthusiasm for the science behind the cooking. She didn't just show us what to do - she explained why we doing it. Aside from being knowledgeable, Mukti was extremely inviting (the cooking class takes place in her own kitchen) and fun to be around. Can't wait until her cookbook comes out and hope that I'll be able to return for another class soon! My only wish is that I had found her on her website instead of via coursehorse, as it would have been nice to have had the entire fee go to a small business owner.
