I really enjoyed the courses! Raphael meets you where you’re at and helps develop you as an artist. I appreciate the techniques I learned over the three sessions that I’ll be able to take with me moving forward. Raphael taught me how to get proportions correct and a few tricks for breaking down complex objects into simple shapes. And through the use of charcoal, I was able to learn about the importance of contrasting light and dark values. I definitely recommend taking these classes regardless of skill level.
  • Art Workshop (Wednesday)

Rafael’s art class in Chelsea was such a wonderful experience. I hadn’t done art seriously in over a decade, so I came in feeling both excited and nervous, with pretty high expectations for myself. From the very first class, Rafael created a calm, supportive space that helped ease that pressure. He guided me in a way that allowed me to explore the subject freely and reconnect with a creative part of myself that I had truly missed. I took three classes, and each one felt like a meaningful refresher...not just technically, but emotionally as well. It reminded me why I loved making art in the first place. The environment is incredibly welcoming and friendly; everyone was chatty and open, which made the whole experience even more enjoyable. I’m already looking forward to taking more classes here and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting to (re)discover their creativity in a supportive setting.

Taking the Fundamentals of Drawing and Painting workshop was a truly enriching experience. The class covered all the essentials: mark mapping, measuring proportion, and building a solid value scale that we later applied to figure and still-life studies. I especially enjoyed working with charcoal, exploring techniques for tonal blending and learning how to control contrast to create mood and atmosphere. Raul has a thoughtful, encouraging teaching style, offering helpful demonstrations and individual critiques that made complex concepts much clearer. The studio environment was relaxed yet focused — filled with natural light, quiet conversation, and a sense of shared curiosity among the students. Everyone worked at their own pace, which made it easy to absorb the material without pressure. By the end of the session, I felt far more confident in my ability to observe and translate form onto paper. It was a beautifully structured and inspiring class that reignited my love for drawing.
  • Art Workshop (Wednesday)

The Fundamentals of Drawing and Painting class was a wonderful, hands-on introduction to the building blocks of drawing. We spent time learning mark mapping — understanding how to translate what we see into confident, intentional lines. Raul guided us through exercises on proportion, helping us train our eyes to see relationships between shapes and alignments accurately. One of the highlights was developing a value scale and applying it to our charcoal drawings to bring depth and realism to our work. We also practiced tonal blending with charcoal, learning how subtle shifts in tone can completely transform a drawing. The classroom had a warm, creative energy — students were friendly and supportive, and the instructor gave each of us personalized feedback. By the end of the course, I felt that my technical precision and confidence had grown tremendously. It was an inspiring experience that made drawing feel both approachable and deeply rewarding.

A good class for all skill types, I’m a beginner and felt very comfortable throughout the learning process
  • Art Workshop (Wednesday)

The “Fundamentals of Drawing and Painting” class has become one of my favorite parts of the week. Raphael is a great teacher - supportive, instructive, and kind. The first class, we learned “mark-mapping” to sketch the shape of objects with charcoal, then tonal blending, working from an initial study to final drawing. The second class, we refined our drawings, and in the third, we started using color. Each student (around 6 people each week) has their own still life set up and are in different phases depending on when they started as a student — someone has even been there for 1.5 years. It feels like a really supportive, positive atmosphere and I can see myself progress each week. Moreover, Raphael shares quotes and stories and reinforce this “active meditation”. If you’re on the fence, I highly recommend trying this class out — it’s been so fun relearning how to draw and taking 2.5 hours for myself. I look forward to continuing after this 3-week session ends!
  • Art Workshop (Wednesday)

This course covered a great strategy for starting drawing. Over the three sessions I learned a technique called "mark mapping" which helps to build the scaffolding of drawing in a way that's really intuitive. The instructor then walks through how to fill in the shading "values" of the drawing and finally how to add details to the drawing. The drawings are usually of abstract shapes - mine was hardware. My sessions were all charcoal based but I was able to transfer the skills to pencil outside of the class relatively easily. It helped me get started with building a practice out of drawing.
  • Art Workshop (Wednesday)

I took the Fundamentals of Drawing & Painting and I loved it! I reconnected with my passion for art and I was guided very well to complete a piece of art I was proud of and could hang up! Would 100% recommend!

This class was very fun and informative! As someone who was interested in exploring their creativity, this was a really engrossing and community-based class to enjoy. The techniques about mark mapping, blending and erasing with charcoal and value were great. I would recommend this to anyone who wants to get creative - super good for beginners!
  • Art Workshop (Wednesday)

I had a lot of fun and learned a lot in this class! The different techniques, from Mark Mapping to blending/erasing with charcoal, to the value scale, were really helpful and clear. I feel like I progressed a lot in just a three week period with Raphael’s instruction. It was a really warm, community environment which made it enjoyable. Would recommend to anyone who wants to tap into their creative side. As pretty much a total beginner, it was great for me!

  • Art Workshop (Wednesday)

If you had shown me the painting I created before starting this class, I never would have believed it was mine and that I could create something so advanced. Raphael is an incredibly encouraging teacher who helped me discover artistic skills I didn’t even know I had. His techniques are especially beginner-friendly, making the whole experience even more enjoyable. I’ve always loved drawing for fun, but I never had the motivation or supplies to take it further. This class gave me the perfect opportunity to explore a new hobby and dedicate time to my creativity each week.
  • Art Workshop (Wednesday)

Raphael's art class is great for anyone who wants to start learning to draw or improve skills you already have. Over my time taking his course I was able to create work with charcoal and pastel that proudly hangs in my home. • Art Workshop (Wednesday)

I’ve been attending Raphael’s drawing workshops for a few months, and I can confidently say it’s the best drawing studio in Manhattan. The improvement in my skills has been incredible, and I owe it to Raphael’s dedication and expertise. Raphael’s investment in each class is remarkable. He not only walks us through various techniques but also encourages each student to find their own voice and style, which has been invaluable to my artistic growth. His unique approach of incorporating insightful art history discussions adds a whole new dimension to the experience. I highly recommend Raphael’s workshops to anyone looking to refine their skills or discover a new passion for drawing!

This class has been a true gift. Rafaei is not only a talented and skilled artist but a generous and supportive teacher. He gives clear attention to the needs of his students but encourages us to find our way of expressing ourselves. He is both knowledgable and relaxed and an outstanding guide. I now go to class as often as I can and my confidence and skill are growing.

  • Art Workshop (Wednesday)

I’ve participated three times in Raphael-Raul’s art class now and enjoy it every time. He takes time for each student and explains every step which eventually leads you to your final painting. We always have very nice conversations which creates an even more comfortable atmosphere. I can’t wait to go there again.
  • Art Workshop (Wednesday)

Raphael was phenomenal. I came in with no drawing skills and he gave a good balance of technique, critique and encouragement. I liked that he also taught composition fundamentals. I look forward to coming back.
