Morgan Madison creates work in glass and other media that is informed by his love of drawing and inspired by place- the colors, materials and forms that comprise the man-made and natural environments around us. His interest in these elements stems from their ability to tell us about the character of a place as well as to tell us something about ourselves.
This class will explore the process and techniques Morgan uses to achieve the distinct linear quality and crisp character of his glass wall panels. Through group exercises and one-on-one attention we will explore aspects of the creative process from developing ideas and working in the sketchbook to executing work in glass and preparing work for and firing it in the kiln. Techniques to be covered will include- using frit and sheet glass to create lines and define compositions, building layers to add depth and complexity, creating relief with fiber paper and screen printing with glass powders to add texture and pattern.
Three different projects will allow students to explore these techniques while challenging them to relax creative inhibitions and consider concept and its relationship to technique. Towards the end of class we will also address the basics of cold working and considerations to take into account when finishing work. Each student will have the chance to cold work at least one of their projects with the aim of leaving the experience with a fully realized piece.
The primary objective of this class is to empower students by helping them develop the tools to pursue their own unique visions efficiently, confidently and to have fun while doing so.
