Class Description

Description

This workshop focused on a specific technique called “Networking,” which involves connecting rods of glass together in a tight, web-like configuration which eventually creates a hollow form with a defined silhouette. This specialized technique “Networking” class will focus on building a solid foundation for construction technique by bending and welding rods together. You will use life-sized drawings or blueprints to make pieces in two- and/or three-dimensions.

This class will cover structural analysis, and design analysis to make sculptural pieces. We will work with small diameter solid rods in sculptural contexts. Most of the time will be spent working on projects and developing designs. Design and engineering concepts will be used to build the frameworks for the pieces. This tedious networking technique can use any type of constructions from body ornaments to life size sculptures. Focusing on concept and technical skills, we will push ideas from the sketchbook onto the torch.

What to Expect:

  • Networking construction is not easy as you have to see objects in 3 dimensions. A positive attitude, desire, and willingness to learn is required.
  • If you know how to do technical drawing, it is a plus.
  • Additional work time for intensive students:
    • Students will also have access to additional hours in the flame shop, without instruction, on Thursday- Sunday from 5-8pm.
    • Students must be able to work safely, and independently be able to set up their work station.
    • Students participating in student hours will need to be approved by the instructor and TA’s.
Eligibility:

  • Basic flameworking skills are required.
  • If you have little to no flameworking experience, try to take classes at a local studio before this intensive workshop.

Pick-up:

  • The glass needs to cool down overnight, so the students will have to return to UrbanGlass once notified to pick up their work.
