In this three-day whirlwind experience, students will be introduced to the traditional pate de verre casting process.
Pate de Verre is a technique that was coined in late 19th Century France, but which has its roots in antiquity. This painterly casting process consists of mixing crushed colored glasses with a liquid binder to form pastes that can be placed into a heat-resistant mold and fused in a kiln to create a solid glass object. The resulting glass form is characteristically translucent, often sugar like and glows from within when lit.
Through the making of small glass samples that will be fired during the class and used for reference, students will create an individual relief tile, which will be fired at the end of the class. Together with hands-on experience, this class will include presentations and demonstrations covering process history and examples, including clay relief modeling, lost-wax casting using alginate molds, refractory mold making, glass selection, preparation and application, firing procedure, and finishing options.
Important Thing to Note:
This is a multi-level class open to beginners and those who wish to explore the Pate de Verre process in greater depth.
