Combining flameworking with alternative photo processes, this experimental workshop aims to explore the relationship between object and image to achieve unexpected outcomes. We will explore optics and distortion while creating unique images, projections, videos, and objects by utilizing handmade, flame-worked lenses together with digital photography and photographic processes such as cyanotypes.
Working in the flame studio and cold shop, we will explore a variety of methods for creating glass lenses. Putting our lenses to use, students will create cyanotypes, and explore optics with experimental digital photography.
The workshop will culminate with a group discussion reviewing the images made and examining the functionality of the lenses themselves as art objects.
No previous experience with glass or photography is necessary. Please bring your camera(s) to class on the first day.
