In this workshop students will focus on refining technical skills as a means to explore how simplification can broaden our creative outcomes. We will work through basic forms in clear glass while emphasizing efficient workflow and heat management. We will take a closer look at the blowing processes’ constituent parts (gathering, marvering, centering, body mechanics, etc) and strive to deepen our understanding of the working characteristics of the material. Finally, we will use color bar to cover basic color application techniques and discuss the implications on the blowing process and our visual goals.
What to Expect: Students will observe hot-shop demonstrations before breaking out into smaller work groups to implement new principles and techniques. Regardless of your experience level, come prepared with personal goals in mind; one-on-one instruction will be offered to personalize concepts to the individual. Teamwork and focus will be our foundation to create opportunities for growth and most importantly to have fun together.
Eligibility: All skill levels are welcome but some previous furnace glassblowing experience is recommended. Students should feel comfortable gathering glass from the furnace and moving through the steps of making a basic cup. Open to ages 14 and up.
Pick-up: The glass needs to cool down overnight, so the students will have to return to UrbanGlass once notified to pick up any work made hot on the final day.
This is an in-person class taking place on-site at UrbanGlass. Health and safety guidelines will be emailed to you upon registration.
