The premise of this class is for students to explore techniques beyond the hot shop creation, specifically the inclusion of neon and light. This course will encourage thinking of glass as a multi-step, multi-media process. The basic foundation will focus on the creation of blown glass forms that will be filled and illuminated with noble gases (such as neon, argon, krypton, or xenon). The course will provide a basic understanding of neon. We will discuss the different gases, the effects of gas pressure(including plasma), different effects achieved by varying forms, and transformer use. By the end of the workshop, students will leave with glass forms that are filled with gas and can be illuminated.
Important Thing to Note: - Students should have basic hot shop skills and a desire to expand their vocabulary of the material as a sculptural expression.
- It is recommended that they have taken at least one introductory glass course, as we will not be covering gathering and beginning process techniques.
