Our Tibetan Carpet Weaving class meets on two Sundays.
In this course, students will learn the traditional Tibetan hand-knotting techniques, explore a range of motifs, and may choose to create a wall hanging orkhaden, an intimate sitting rug.
Carpet-making in Tibet is believed to have originated centuries ago, as early as 7th Century A.D. It most likely evolved in isolation, which explains why its structure is unique to any other rug-making technique worldwide. Used for various purposes, such as carpets, wall hangings, or saddles, the rugs are traditionally made from changpel, a type of sheep’s wool from the Tibetan highlands using the cut senneh loop.
