Class Description

Description

The television and streaming programs available to viewers today are more vibrant and varied than ever before. This one-day, six-hour intensive taught by a working TV writer will introduce you to the fundamentals of writing a TV series. You’ll learn how a writers’ room works as a team to create stories, and you’ll come away with tips for writing your own spec pilot.

Instructor Laura Marks (The Good Fight, The Expanse, The Exorcist) will lead you through an in-depth survey of the creative process from a writer’s POV, with a particular focus on the hour-long dramatic series.

What You Will Learn:

Points of Entry: ways to start working in TV

Breaking Story: how a writers’ room constructs a season and an episode; how to contribute your own voice while supporting the creativity of your colleagues

Outlining: expanding the story beats and communicating your intention

Writing the Draft:
scene structure, character and voice; collaborative drafts vs. single-writer drafts

The One-Hour Pilot: creating a solid spec pilot that will become your writing sample as you approach the industry
