One of the most effective ways to develop your wine knowledge is to taste a wide variety of different wines. This comprehensive around-the-world wine and cheese tasting offers exactly that opportunity, featuring selections from diverse regions and emerging wine-producing areas. Rather than focusing on a single country or theme, this tasting showcases wines from around the globe, with particular attention to up-and-coming producers from South Africa,...

Wine 101
NYC Wine Company See all classes by this school @ 13 E 8th St, New York, NY
Wine 101 is not only one of the finest classes we offer, but it is also my personal favorite to teach. We delve into fundamentals, but beyond a simple rote review of grape varieties and wine regions, our primary goal is to make wine an accessible friend and companion for your enjoyment. In this comprehensive class, you will become familiar with what you personally like, and more importantly, understand why you like it. This knowledge will empower...
The New Iberia
NYC Wine Company See all classes by this school @ 13 E 8th St, New York, NY
Innovations are unfolding across all the major wine-producing countries, including France, Italy, and the United States, plus newer scenes beyond them. We could pour a great lineup from any single one, but none would be as compelling or as delicious as the bottles we will be opening on May 9.

The New Italy
NYC Wine Company See all classes by this school @ 13 E 8th St, New York, NY
Back in May, we hosted the 'New Spain', followed by the 'New France' in July. And while it wasn't my intention, I guess we created a new genre because here comes the 'New Italy', and this one will not disappoint. I love Italian classics - Barolo, Brunello, Valpolicella, and Chianti (especially Chianti!). But, as it is with Bordeaux in France, or Rioja in Spain, those regions need no hype or promotion. They produce...

Mountain Wines

When talking about wine, people love to throw around the term ‘complexity’. But what exactly is it, and when you taste it, how do you know you’re tasting it? Of course, like beauty, all things subjective will always be in the eye of the beholder. But as a rule, a wine is considered to be complex if it offers multiple flavors simultaneously, if it changes over time, and if you can still taste it, long after swallowing. I can still taste some...
Sake Seminar
NYC Wine Company See all classes by this school @ 167 W 23rd St, New York, NY
The history and importance of sake will be discussed as well as how to pair them with various types of cuisine. Yes sake is unique. Yes it boasts a rich history. And without a doubt, sake has myriad faces, from the simple to the complex, from delicate to heavy. But what makes this beverage so extraordinary is that it just tastes so damn good. Period. Whether a rich, undiluted Junmai Genshu or a light, delicate Daiginjo-shu, Sake delivers flowers,...
Regional Gems: Fabled Wine Districts
NYC Wine Company See all classes by this school @ 167 W 23rd St, New York, NY
In this class we will explore some of the most unique and distinct wines of the world. Bottles will come from all corners of the globe, some known, and others from obscure zones that are well kept secrets. The bottle prices will of course vary, and while some can be had for around $20, others are notably higher. If pricier, are they better? Maybe, yet despite wine being my life, I have not lost touch with the reality that $50 is a LOT of...
Pairing with Food: Beer vs. Wine
NYC Wine Company See all classes by this school @ 167 W 23rd St, New York, NY
Just like Clyde needed Bonnie, and Ernie needed Bert, food requires drink to be all that it can be. And by drink, we do mean alcohol. But wine isn’t the only tonic able to liven up a meal: Though beer has been produced for millennia, over the past twenty years, brewers have been pushing the envelope, turning malt, barley, and hops into elixirs unimaginable just a generation ago. Which means determining which beverage to pair with what food is more...
Wines of the Mediterranean
NYC Wine Company See all classes by this school @ 167 W 23rd St, New York, NY
The Mediterranean Sea, one of the world's most important (and beautiful) bodies of water. People and goods have crossed its waters for millennia, exchanging money, ideas, technology, and culture. The same can also be said of grapevines, and winemaking techniques. Without this exchange, and the resulting experimentation, many of today's wines would not exist. But we humans like to fiddle, to test new methods and see...
Ribera y Rueda
NYC Wine Company See all classes by this school @ 167 W 23rd St, New York, NY
This is a special, one-night only event, held in conjunction with the US trade representatives for the Ribera del Duero & Rueda wine regions. The class will be led by Andrew Harwood, of NYC wine company, along with representatives from Spain. Spain is one of the most important and acclaimed wine-producing countries on the planet. Its varied geography and infinite micro-climates also make it one of the most diverse which, if you like variety,...
The Older, The Better?
NYC Wine Company See all classes by this school @ 330 W 11th St, New York, NY
When it comes to wine, “the older the better” is perhaps the most bandied about meme of all time. But is it true? Tales abound of ancient bottles which, once opened, cast spells over those lucky enough to taste the contents within. And yes, such bottles do exist. But they are rare, as most wines are designed to be consumed within the first few years after they are bottled. And the ones that do have the structure for aging must also be kept for...
Italy: North to South
NYC Wine Company See all classes by this school @ 13 E 8th St, New York, NY
Without question, Italy produces and contributes a remarkable percentage of the world's most distinctive and interesting wines across numerous regions. In addition to this incredible diversity, the sheer breadth and range of wine styles produced throughout the country is equally and remarkably impressive. From the steely, minerally-textured white wines of Tre Venezie and Val d'Aosta to the dark, powerful red wines of Sicily and Campania, Italy stands...
The Art of Blending (for Singles)
NYC Wine Company See all classes by this school @ 13 E 8th St, New York, NY
This is an event for single people to meet other single people. But it's still a wine event, a great opportunity to learn, relax, and have a good time (even if nobody catches your eye). Granted, our events have always been a great place to meet other people. Maybe it's the wine, maybe it's the vibe we create, but either way, I know at least three married couples who met each other in one of my wine classes. Ok, on to the details......
The Best of Summer Wines
NYC Wine Company See all classes by this school @ 167 W 23rd St, New York, NY
A combination of whites, rosés, and a bottle or two of red. This is the best of summer, bottles bristling with acid and energy, wines both delicate and bold, but all designed to deliver pleasure. White wine is often viewed as a beginner's beverage, training wheels perhaps. But nothing could be further from the truth, as white wines can mean serious business. True, some are boring, plain, and uneventful. We won't...
The Art of Pairing (Couples Tasting)
NYC Wine Company See all classes by this school @ 167 W 23rd St, New York, NY
Please Note: This is a Couples class, and the price reflected is for two people. When you checkout, each one seat for $158 will be good for two. This special event will highlight some of the most successful pairings we've encountered recently. An array of small-batch cheeses served alongside aromatic whites and robust reds. Whether it's wine with cheese, curtains to a window, or one person to another, the art of pairing usually relies on alchemy...
Napa vs. Bordeaux
NYC Wine Company See all classes by this school @ 330 W 11th St, New York, NY
Both grow Cabernet Sauvignon, both are fiercely loyal to their region, and both create intense, complex, long-lived wines. Yet they are not the same. Bordeaux, with its centuries of history and ornate chateaux, claims restraint and finesse as well as power, yet by a judicious hand. The wines of Pauillac, Margaux, Graves, St Julien, Pomerol, St Emilion and St Estèphe are all possible appearances. As for Napa, they too have a rich history, yet it...
Big Bold Reds
NYC Wine Company See all classes by this school @ 13 E 8th St, New York, NY
Wines from the "New World" are easy to like. Places like California, Australia, and Argentina, tend to produce wines which are fruit forward and often, quite rich when compared to those from places like Burgundy in France, or Rioja, Spain, both from the “Old World”. Ultimately, these big & bold bottlings have become extremely popular due to their pure hedonistic pleasure, yet they can also tax the wallet. Furthermore, wines fashioned in this...
Focus on Red
NYC Wine Company See all classes by this school @ 167 W 23rd St, New York, NY
Even though white wines can be as "serious" and as complex as their counterparts in rouge, reds beckon to us in ways whites often do not, and I, too, fall prey as much as anyone to this call. If you welcome the bite of winter solely to find guilt-free solace in a rich, peppery Shiraz, or if you can find succor in a glass of red at day's end, never mind the season nor the forecast, this class is a must. During this one evening seminar we will explore...
Exploring Cabernet Sauvignon
NYC Wine Company See all classes by this school @ 330 W 11th St, New York, NY
This grape variety is known the world over. It forms the backbone for many of the densest, longest-lived reds anywhere on the planet. Its wines tend to be big, full-bodied, and in need of at least a few years in the cellar (or closet, under the bed...). Despite these characteristics, however, this can be a versatile grape. This is exhibited most clearly when tasting a line-up of wines from numerous locales; Cabernet Sauvignon, when grown in South...
South of the Border
NYC Wine Company See all classes by this school @ 330 W 11th St, New York, NY
Not the Rio Grande, nor the fireworks bonanza tucked between the Carolinas, but rather the equator. We'll taste and discuss well known regions such as Mendoza and Barossa, while also highlighting the lesser known, many of which provide some of the world's best wine values today. Malbec from Argentina burst onto the scene about ten years ago, and is loved by many, and for good reason, yet once you try Carmenere from Chile, you may rethink the...

Italy: North to South
Great knowledge. Fun experience. May not be best for. Novice but our 3 previous course selections were cancelled due to attendance. It was not the instructors fault - but not an environment welcoming to introductory education or for more elementary questions. Communication was lacking prior to the course - we did not receive the link or the promised cheese pairing suggestions. Would definitely book another course though - just not as welcoming an experience as would have been desired. -
