Class Description

Description

Learn pottery from start to finish in this eight week pottery wheel throwing course in Manhattan.

If you're curious about pottery making and want a course on the process from beginning to end, then this NYC ceramics course is for you. It's a chance for you to try your hand at the potter's wheel or level up your existing skills.

All classes are beginner friendly.

During this hands-on pottery course, you'll meet for eight consecutive weeks and be able to fire ten pieces during the term at no additional cost. See below for our course outline so you know what to expect each week.

Course Outline:

  • Week One: Potter's Wheel Basics
    • Learn the basics of wheel throwing, including how to make simple forms on the pottery wheel. Then, your instructor will guide you as you try it yourself. You'll be able to try and try again until you get a piece (or more) that you like.
  • Weeks Two to Four: Wheel Throwing Techniques
    • Continue honing your skills on the wheel. Coning, centering, and pulling walls, as well as shaping pottery and attaching handles, will all be discussed and demonstrated.
  • Week Five: Trimming
    • We will trim the works from the course that are your favorites by turning them upside down on the potter's wheel. You will also be able to sponge your works to a smooth finish and further refine and decorate.
  • Week Six or Seven: Glazing
    • In weeks six or seven, you'll learn glazing, which is how you decorate and add color to your pottery by painting or dipping in a liquid glass suspension. Various colors and surfaces are possible.
  • Final Class: Review, Housekeeping, packing and Crit

During the last class any straggler pots can be finished and glazed up and students will have a show and tell admiring their hard work. Shelves will be cleaned and cleared for the next session.

This unique pottery course is great for those who want to experience clay and have their hand in every part of the wheel throwing process from start to finish, allowing the student to be exposed to all the stages of firing and finishing. If you're interested in learning a new and fun hobby, pottery will allow you to dig your hands into clay, unwind, and create unique handmade ceramic goods!

Please note: Public dates for this class require at least 2 guests to run. In the unlikely event that we don't reach this number, we'll cancel the class; in this case we'll inform you and allow you to get a refund or reschedule, so please watch your email/SMS one day prior to the class.

What you'll get

Finished pottery pieces.

Note:

We are excited to share the joy of clay with you! Please note that when you book a class with us, you are paying for the instructional experience, studio time, materials, and the guidance of our instructors, rather than a guaranteed finished product.

Ceramics is an unpredictable art form that goes through many stages—from shaping and drying to complex bisque and glaze firings. While we do our very best to guide your pieces safely through the kiln, ceramics can occasionally crack, warp, or break during the firing process due to natural physical properties.

Complimentary Firing: As a complimentary part of the class experience, we include the firing and glazing for one piece per person (selected by you at the end of the session).

No Guarantees: Because of the inherent risks involved in firing pottery, finished pieces are not guaranteed, and studio fees are non-refundable in the rare event that a piece is damaged during the firing process.

We appreciate your understanding and look forward to getting our hands dirty with the creative process together!

Refund Policy

No refunds, but can reschedule if student notifies us more than 24 hours before class.

In any event where a customer wants to cancel their enrollment and is eligible for a full refund, a 5% processing fee will be deducted from the refund amount.
